Short Mat Singles Final – what a match!
In unusual circumstances, the final of the 2026 short mat singles championship, was contested by a husband and wife team, David and June Commerford, and was a ftitting end to the competition, which had been very well organised by Dave Gadd.
It’s difficult to decide which was the most exciting of Saturday’s events; Mylor’s short mat final or England’s last kick disappointment against ‘Les Bleus’ in Paris. The sort mat final looked one-way to start, with David going into a 5-o lead. then June overtaking it, before trading blow for blow, finally reaching a grandstand finish. The last schedued end (15th) saw June needing two to force a decider. This she achieved with the very last wood of the game. Unfortunately, it proved an end too far and David took the title with a strong finish.
The game was memorable for the quality and accuracy of shot-making. In the entire match, the central ‘block’ wasn’t hit once, only two woods were sent off the mat, and the marker had to send out for more chalk!
Well done to both players and congratulations to David.
